This job is much easier if you have a socket that fits on the end of the threaded stud on top of the shock. Lisle makes one and they are available for <$10 at many parts stores (often out of stock). Also available from snap-on and mac tool. Without this tool it is nearly impossible to tighten the top nut on driver's side front shock. You can get a wrench on the nut, but you do not have enough space to tighten the nut. You to hold the nut still with a wrench and tighten the stud with the socket. Take a look under the hood at the top of the shock and you will see what you are up against. The passenger side can be done without the special socket, but is much easier with the socket. The only other thing problem area is rusted on front lower shock nuts. Best to soak in penetrant overnight. You might need some heat as well.
Another trick to getting the old front shocks off is to unbolt the bottom nut to free the shock from the lower control arm grab the bottom of the shock and simply bend the top shaft back and forth in the body mount to snap the shaft...very cave man, but saves time.
