Engine tranny swap advice - 88 spg and 91 turbo

Hi all:
My daily driver is a 91 turbo convertable in the following condition.
Tranny: has the 2nd gear problem that requires extra care to engage. I have to either double clutch it or wait a second before going into the gear. I cannot downshift into the gear. I tried redline oil to cure problem. This helped but did not fix it. Although annoying, it is workable.
Engine: 160k very strong burns no oil. Has a small leak some where, even though I recently changed the front oil seal. The car has the red box option. Turbo works good.
I recently stripped my 88 SPG which has a good motor (180k) and tranny. Plenty of power and also leaks. Turbo works good, but has a high pitch whistle. No tranny problems.
I need help in coming up with the best strategy.
These are my choices as I see them:
1: Take the SPG engine and rebuild it, since it is out of the car already.
Then mount the engine and tranny, from the 88 spg, into my 91 convt.
I this a good idea?
What problems will I run into? ecu, exhaust hook up, etc...
2: Take the 91 motor and tranny out and put in the 91 motor mounted on the 88 tranny.
Can this be done?
Are there mounting issues between the 91 engine and 88 tranny etc.?
Thanks in advance,
mahnu
