As GregA says, it's likely the main oil seal.
The major difficulty in replacing the seal is getting the main pulley off. There isn't a lot of space there. Go to WWW.Townsendimports.com, look under the Engine area for "relacing main seal 900". It has a lot of good information.
If you go to the effort to get to the main seal, you might as well replace the oil pump O-ring. The oil pump mounts to the front (firewall side) of the engine, with the crankshaft running right through the middle. The main seal is actually in the oil pump. There is a rubber O-ring between the back of the oil pump and the engine (timing chain cover, to be exact). You can replace just the main seal with the pump still on the car, but it's pretty easy to remove the oil pump and replace the O-ring behind it. They often fail, and can be mistaken for a main seal. Or they fail two weeks after you replaced the main seal.
The main pulley is also called the 'harmonic balancer.' It's a sandwich of two pulleys with rubber in the middle. If the rubber gets old, the two parts separate. In a catastrophic separation, the pulleys come apart and you lose drive to the water pump, power steering, and alternator. In the typical slow failure, the outer and inner pulleys spin differently at startup. The sign is a squeal at startup that gets longer with time. If the rubber is shot, the outer pulley can back into the engine and eventually cut a hole in the face of the oil pump.
If you're going to do the seals, check the health of the harmonic balancer. Draw a chalkline across the face of the pulley when cold. Start the engine a few times. If the line no longer lines up, you know the inner and outer portions are shifting. Also inspect the rubber for cracks. It's not a cheap part, so I don't recommend replacing one just for yucks. But if it shows any signs of wear or rubber cracking replace it, as it has to be removed to get to the main seal.
As to books, Haynes sells a manual. It only goes up to '88, but for $15, it's pretty good. Saabs don't change that much. You can find Haynes in most autoparts stores and bookstores. Cheaper mail order.
The Gold Standard in manuals is the Robert Bentley manual. (http://www.rb.com). There are two 900 manuals, a 8 valve up to '88, and the 16V up to '93. It tain't cheap, but it is very complete. Check Amazon.com and other mail order places. You'll end up spending around $40, but consider it a special tool that will save you in the long run. I've never minded the cost of it.
Good luck!
