There is no sealant on the crank pulley bolt. It is held in place simply by proper torquing. (A LOT of torque, as I remember).

I'm actually trying to visualize what you're talking about, and I don't think this crank pulley works that way.

The crankshaft comes through the oil pump, and at the face of the oil pump is the main (oil) seal. This is a typical friction seal on the shaft. This is what keeps the oil in the engine.

There is a short section of shaft outside the engine, outside of the seal, and that's where the pulley mounts. There is a keyway in the shaft and on the pulley to keep the pulley from spinning. The purpose of the bolt is just to keep the pulley from falling off the shaft. The torque for driving the belts is transferred from the shaft to the pulley by shear. There is no need to seal the bolt because there is no oil there.

Or am I misunderstanding?

As to replacing the harmonic balancer, if you suspect it, by all means replace it. It comes off anyway, and yes, you don't want to do this twice. I will replace a perfectly good oil pump O-ring while doing a seal because the O-ring is cheap. Because of the cost of the pulley, I wouldn't replace it as a matter of course unless I had a reason to suspect it. Sounds like you have a reason to suspect it.
