While master cylinder is most likely, the problem could also be a leaky slave cylinder or a bulging hose to the slave. BTW the piston in the slave does not hit a "lever," instead the slave piston directly contacts the release bearing, which in turn directly presses against the fingers of the clutch pressure plate.

Fluid from a leaky slave cylinder will eventually leak out the hole under the flywheel. To rule a leak out without waiting for the drip, you can pull the plastic clutch cover off and look for leaks under the slave cylinder. If there is no fluid leakage, the problem is either the master or the bulging hose.

Have a helper press down on the clutch pedal while you observe the hose connection to the slave and watch for an bulge in the hose and also look for leaks.

If none of these items turns up bad, then the problem is in the master. A rebuild kit is available, but if the cylinder bore is pitted, new seals will quickly go bad. Replacement of the master cylinder is probably a more practical way to go and the job can be done in 2 hours even the first time.

The cylinder is held to the firewall by two bolts and hooked up to the pedal with a pin and a clip. The fluid feed hose to the cylinder should be clamped with a small vise grip so you don't spill fluid. Upon installation of the new cylinder it is best to reattach the metal fluid line before you bolt up the master, since it can be tricky to get the fitting threaded squarely. Bleed the clutch system after install. Either by pressure at the resevoir cap or reverse bleed though a hose to the slave with the feed higher than the resevoir level. A mity-vac can also be used to suck the hose from the slave. Pumping the air out with the pedal doesn't usually work.
