Calling Fuel Pump Experts (long)

I have a 85T that I suspect may have a failing fuel pump. The reason I think this is because it idles steadily at startup, but in a few minutes the fuel pump starts to buzz louder and louder and the idle gets correspondingly rougher and rougher. It won't stall but swings from 850 - 1100 rpm.
I have a used pump that I want to swap in, but I want to make sure it's the same pump. I understand that two similar (but different) roller pumps were used in 1985. Unfortunately I can't find where the part # is located. Where'd they put it? Also, what's the difference between these two pumps?
One more question: Why would this problem only manifest at idle? In other words, if fuel delivery is lacking at idle, why wouldn't the higher fuel demands of driving / boosting be affected?
Of course the fuel filter is suspect also and I don't know how old it is. I've only owned the car a month but it looks like the previous owner was good about maintenance so I would guess the f.filter is relatively new.
Thanks a lot,
Chris
