Higher octane doesn't necessarily mean more power. You need the compression to make it work... A healthy motor running stock boost should really not need much more than 92-94 octane to do everything it can. Higher boost levels *may* make higher octane gas more useful, but I doubt you'd see any tangible benefit unless you have a seriously high-strung motor.
That said, if you don't have the compression (whether natural or "artificial" from boost) the engine will not be able to properly combust the fuel, and you'll end up with poor power or poor fuel economy and probably both. A good idea is the the Pin 19 knock sensor mod (the LED to monitor knock) - if that little light isn't going off, you don't need higher octane gas.
