plenty of people--especially saab themselves (see below)--have put turbos on n/a SAAB motors to good effect and longevity (as long as boost is not too high). further, the same is true for non-SAABs: people bolt turbos onto n/a cars every day (search ebay for "turbo"). I autocross with guys with DIY turbocharged cars as varied as a bio-diesel 4-door Rabbit (with propane injection), Corvair, Miatas, Civic, Integra (ok, supercharger), Datsun 510 & 280Z, M3, etc. Many of these guys have left their compression stock with no problems.

search the performance board for more information on n/a-->turbo. as i recall, "beaudreau" has done this (he's also fit SDS to a saab), "ubipa," "patprice" (used a Volvo turbo), "85sled," et al. (i'm sure i'm missing some here.) for more information on diy turbocharging in general, read grmotorsports.com's archives. hardly a week passes that someone doesn't post there for information on fabricating manifolds, calculating turbo size, managing timing, dealing with cams, etc.

with an n/a saab, as i mentioned before, you don't have to deal with the same issues that most diy'ers do cuz you can swap out parts from a 900t that will fit no problem. with a wrecked 900t, cost is perfectly reasonable.

saab has plenty of history producing turbo'd motors without the protection of an apc or added charge cooling effect of an intercooler, having begun doing so in '78 until the early 80s, at which point they added the apc, and then, several years later, the intercooler. also, from 92-94, saab sold turbocharged 16v c900s with no apc or intercooler in Europe (900S LPT). they used a mitsu te05 with what in the States is called the "hi-po" distributor (bosch 010), which has a different timing curve than most US cars (080). if saab did it, why not a diy'er?

on saab heads:

after early 80s, both n/a and turbo saab heads used sodium-filled valves, so you're not at risk of wrecking your n/a head.

on beefier clutches:

n/a cars that have been around the block and have had clutches replaced may even already have the larger turbo clutch, as the 5-piece turbo clutch kit fits n/a motors and is less expensive (see eeuroparts and townsend sites for more info on this; both of these respected saabnet sponsors discuss that most techs buy this turbo kit over offerings for n/a).

on having fun as a shadetree mechanic & getting more ooomph:

a turbo'd n/a isn't going to give you the same performance as a full pressure turbo model, but it'll be quicker around town with its superior low-end torque and, for some people, just enough extra power to satisfy their need.
