point is that plenty of cars produced in the past did not have these features and performed admirably. i agree with you: having the latest technology is a good idea. however, it's not critical in this application. (to see how "old" technology still does just fine, one need only look at the 'vette Z06 - running a pushrod V8; not exactly cutting edge technology...). in other words, no, you don't necessarily need all the "proper parts." in fact, you'll run into issues if you do.
the max boost you can safely run on a saab n/a is low enough that the charge air temps aren't nearly as much of a concern, intercooler is not critical (sorta like not really needing disk brakes in the rear for most cars). also, if you run the apc and crank the boost AND use the EZK, you'll run into high EGT issues when the EZK tries to manage the timing. more has been written on this on the performance board, but bottom line is you can't really concurrently run EZK and full boost (i.e., with APC). at this point, yes, you're better off looking for a turbo model with vacuum/pressure-controlled timing.
one day i will buy a notchback and a wrecked turbo and do the conversion. i think it would be fun. i've driven subaru wagons that are more fun in the city than my low-compression, lag-prone 900t. every time i see a notchback in town, i'm tempted to leave a note on the wiper: "if you blow up your gearbox, call me and I'll take the car off your hands." :-)
cheers...
