My point about the rears overpowering the fronts had nothing to do with the power pushing them. Most people (read "youngish" people if you prefer) like to hear a decent amount of bass in their music. My point is that if you crank the rear speakers to hear the bass, the mids and highs correspondingly increase. In other words, if you have a strong presence of bass from the rear, you will also have a strong presence of mids and highs from the rear. For ideal sound, you want it to sound like all of the sound is coming from in front of you, not behind.
What you said about headroom is true, but it becomes less important as the quality of the amp increases. A high end Phoenix Gold amp can be run at near 90% with excellent sound quality from down low to near max, whereas something like a Sony Xplode will not sound any good over around 60%. In other words, a high end Pheonex Gold amp rated at 50w per channel will sound better at all decibel levels than a 75w per channel Sony Xplode.
About my system, if you are familiar with Alpine V12 amps, you know they, like other competition quality amps, are underrated by about 25%. Any 30w V12 Alpine will put out 37-38w per channel if you look at the "birth certificate". Secondly, this is power at 12 volts. The true power at 13.8 volts is about 50w per channel RMS and over 100w peak. With the clean power of the V12 that is sufficient to push the 4" speakers.
Go to a competition and listen to the quality of some the the "low power" systems with only 15 or 25 watts per channel. That should convince you that you don't need 75w per channel if you are selecting all quality components (unless of course you want sound levels that you can hear 5 blocks away).
The point you did not mention is that speaker efficiency plays a big role in how much power you need to achieve a specific decibel level. An efficient speaker needs much less power. I thought this was too deep for the level of discussion we were having.
