My 85 900T 225K+ miles has had a clunking sound when going over bumps, I thought it was worn shocks, but I had them replaced and it still clunks. I took wheel off and tried to move the rotor/caliper and it seems that the ball joint in the steering rod end is loose, loose enough for me to move it. My question, can I just unscrew the whole end, and replace it, or do I need to remove and replace the ball joints and then reinstall the ends?

Also, It smokes alot!!! I had a place look at the turbo, and they said there was some oil puddling but it might not be the cause. Is there a definitive test for worn turbo seals, valve seals or head gasket. Each of these is time consuming so I don't want to do the wrong "fix".

Thanks, my manual is in storage as I am temporary living space.
