depends exactly where the 'play' is Posted by JimBlake [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: tie rod ends and not ball joints?, thereuare, Tue, 7 Jan 2003 10:07:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Play in the steering/suspension can be either one, or maybe shock mounts too. Or even a loose caliper or sway bar bushings. Ball joints are common failures, so everyone suspects them first.
Tie rod ends are easier to check, you don't have to unload the suspension. If you simply lift the car & try to 'steer' the wheel, you can see if its loose. If there's play in that little ball joint you'll feel it.
There may ALSO be play in the suspension ball joints, but you won't feel that unless you unload the suspension.
Don't worry too much about what the clunk happened to be in other people's cars. Unload your suspension with spacers, then start pulling on stuff till you find what's loose.
Loose CV joint? - reach in & shake the axle.
Shock mounts? - grab a shock & shake it.
Bushings at inboard A-arm pivots?
Don't forget to inspect the lower A-arms for cracks!
Sway bar bushings? - gotta block both sides the same way so the bar is unloaded...
