I too have a clunk and i'm trying to diagnose, but i've been reading that "play" in the wheel/rotor/caliper is a bad ball joint (not tie rod ends). Why do you suspect tie rod ends and not the ball joints? (not doubting you, but want to make sure you got it right b4 u do the work AND teach myself in the process!)

Also, i'm sure you know that you need to unload the suspension to properly test the ball joints by putting a spacer between the upper control arm and the body where the control arm comes thru.

Check TownsendImports.com as they give a great step-by-step process of working on the ball joints and tie rods. If you're in the NYC metro area and want some help i'm willing, as i probably need to do this myself soon.
