Fuel System Kaput/Help 89 900s

My boyfriend and I recently bought an 89 900s. The car sputtered and crapped out today, just barely got off the expressway to a parking space. The engine light was on and the car reeked by the time I could find a parking spot to abandon it. We're determined to fix the problem by next Tues., before the car acquires a ticket where it is parked for streetsweeping.
We need some tips troubleshooting this, since we are not too experienced with the car, yet. Our perhaps naive first guess at a procedure is to check or replace in order 1/fuel pump fuse 2/fuel filter 3/fuel lines 4/fuel pump, but from what I've dug through in the archives there are lots of other mysterious things to consider, like oxygen sensors.
I haven't found any neat diagrams showing how to replace all of these parts, such as we found for the brake pads. We're also lacking appropriate tools for the Saab, which we also found out when replacing the brake pads.
If anyone can offer expertise (and a tool list) we would be very appreciative. We have the Haynes manual, although it is for the wrong model year (thru 88!).
Could this problem result from driving for a long period of time (say a 7-hr snowstorm) in a high gear (4th) at a low speed (15-20 mph)? Is that possible? Or is it just a groan from an old beast. Many thanks.
