Here's a link to the No-Start Checks for your car. The Haynes will cover your '89 for the most part, but it's certainly not the best for troubleshooting this sort of problem.
Sputtering to a stop sounds like what happens when the system voltage gets too low for the ECU to properly control the injectors and for the ignition system to work properly.
Does it (the engine :-) turn over when you try to start it?
If not, it is quite possible that that the battery is pretty well discharged from running so long at low RPMs with the heater, windshield wipers, headlights, etc. going. You could also have worn brushes in the alternator or a marginal alternator ground wire.
