It started out with felt and sounded like a worn wheel bearing. Took it to John at Saabsavior and we took both of them out--they were slightly worn but nothing very bad. Replaced with two new bearings and ball joints. Problem still there. Hmmmmm.... All of a sudden the problem worsened--hard vibration from about 10-75 mph especially under acceleration but also there when just coasting. Felt really nasty. Inner driver, right? Nope. We took them out and they were both fine. John also checked my axle and everything else he could think of on the suspension. Everything checked out ok. He recommended I have the entire front end checked out by a buddy of his at a tire shop. Went to the guy, dropped my car off, and got a call about 3 hours later when they finally got to it. The guy said all 4 tires needed immediate replacement because they were in such bad shape (I'm sure they say this all the time at tire places but he said it was the worst he'd ever seen). Not the tread wear, mind you, but the inside of the tires. You see, where I live (Bloomington, Indiana) there are really, really bad roads. I had Kumho 205/40/16 on Super Aero wheels. Very low profile stuff and, apparently, not enough for my roads. The tire guy showed me my front tires and 3/4 of the inside of the tires there were enormous bubbles that stuck out about 2 inches from where they were supposed to be. He says the bubbles are caused by big potholes on low profile tires. Yikes! They could have exploded on anything and I would have been up the creek without a paddle. The day before I had just driven about 120 miles at about 70-80mph on back roads. Could have been really ugly.
Anyway, today I picked up some new tires--Dunlop Sport 9000 but I got a little thicker tire and now I'll be on 205/50/16. The 40 series just got hammered by the roads. Tomorrow they get put on and I'll hopefully be able to report that my problem has been resolved. If you'd like I can let you know how things turn out.
Since you seem to have checked out a lot of the same stuff I did, I highly recommend looking at your tires.... and not just tread wear. Take the wheel off and inspect the inside of the tire--very easy to overlook but just as important as the treadwear.
Keep your fingers crossed that this fixes my dilemma...
