its just that pre 1992 the law did not require it.. and.. and this is the big "and" a cat would have been an optional extra and would have added mucho pounds to the cost of the cars.. say 500 pounds for example.. cats are power killers fact of life there is no ifs and buts.. the different bhp figures show this.. i am not talkng about fitting a cat into a none cat designed exhaust system either.. the cat fitted cars with the cat designed exhaust systems put out less bhp.. fact of life..

as an example my little 94 rover is fitted with a cat.. the law requires it.. the cat is a little add on.. it goes into the front pipe which comes in two pieces.. u can buy small straight thru pieces of pipe to replace the cat.. the idea being that u put the cat back for the tests.. removing the cat is the basic rover enthusiasts tuneing tip for any bhp increase.. they quote a gain of 6 bhp.. the next one would be another less restrictive air cleaner.. that might be good for say 1.5 bhp.. he he.. after that the power gains get very expensive.. the rover i have puts out 103 bhp from a 1.4 litre NA engine in standard form.. without the cat this would go up to about 110.. there is no extra noise.. the cat cleans it dosnt silence.. dont get me wrong here i am simply pointing that having no cat dosnt mean a car thats too noisy..

but the only difference between the cat car and the none cat car (93) exhaust system wise is the exhaust system front pipe comes in two pieces so as the cat can be bunged in.. this is on the rover i have never looked where the cat goes into a saab to be honest..

but a cat is a power drain.. for emission reasons car makers have to fit them.. there is no way this power loss can be made up with the rest of the system.. cats are there to clean up the exhaust gases.. not to silence they are a restiction in the exhaust system and having the none cat system will give more power and better fuel economy..

the UK none cat saab as it left the factory had a higher power output than the cat fitted one.. something like 8%.. if saab could have gotten this back believe u me they would have.. he he

there is a bit of history to this emission thing.. back in the late seventies i think when the US brought in its emmission controls it buggered up a lot of smaller engine british sports cars and a few well liked US ones.. back then the more normal bigger engined US cars could stand the power loss that the emmision controls caused but cars like the british MG and TR 7 coudnt and it killed em off as far as importing into the US was concerned.. they simple lost their sporty performance and the makers could not do anything about it..

when i talk about fitting a none cat system to a saab i meant the same system as would be fitted to a pre 1992 UK car.. i would imagine they could be found even in the US.. there is nothing special about a US cat fitted saab it would just have less bhp than a pre 1992 UK none cat fitted saab that was otherwise identical.. it would also seem that our cars come with 145 mph speedometers as well.. i think your ones only show 125 mph... he he he.. i wont mention the silly 85mph ones that u got lumbered with back in the early days.. whoops..

the bad teeth by the way are down to a lousy national health dental care system.. what we breath is pretty much the same as what u do.. unless u live in delaware then god help ya.. he he.. my offspring drove thru there a couple of weeks back.. he said the entire place stank like hell of air polution and u could see it in the air..
