starting problem

Well, initially I thought that the car was only doing this in cold weather but it turns out that is not the case. Anyway here goes, after sitting over night I would try to start my car and it would just crank and crank. And sometimes it would fire right up. I took it to the "$AAB $peciali$t" in town and he said:
1. Needs a tune up
One month later
2. Needs AIC valve
One week later
3. Air Mass Meter
One month later
4. Try fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter
Two months later I still have the same problem.
Finally I talked to my father who "works on only American cars" and he suggested I try the Fuel Pump Check Valve. Is this a possibility? How do I check it?
By the way the car is a 1988 SAAB SPG (900 Turbo 2.0l LH 2.2)
Thanks for any input,
Robert
