If you get reverse clunk, the transmission is not motionless when you put the clutch in. This can be caused by lack of full disengagement resulting from an elongated hole in the pedal where the clutch master connects, air in the system, bad clutch master, bad clutch fluid pressure line to slave cyl, leaky slave cyl. Check these items(look for leaks)and bleed system.
If still clunks, it is likely that the pilot bearing is bad or the clutch shaft is rusty. The pilot bearing in the flywheel supports the clutch shaft and when it goes the flywheel will try to spin the clutch shaft even when the clutch is disengaged. The gears in the trans will move when the car is in neutral even for a short time prior to shifting into reverse. Without synchro, youget a cluck. If the shaft splines are corroded, the clutch disk will hang up against the pressure plate or the flywheel even when the clutch is disengaged. Same moving gear problem and same clunk. Remedy is to replace the pilot bearing and grease the clutch shaft splines when the clutch is replaced. Until then put in a forward gear (with syncro) and quickly shift into revers before the gears have a chance to get moving.
