The teeth on the reverse gears tend to get chipped. So, instead of having gears with a nice "ramps" with thich to slide together easily, you get flattened ends on the teeth, which makes it difficult to get them to mesh if there isn't any movement in the transmission.
What you may want to try is, before you shut the engine off, let the clutch pedal up a bit and try to put it into reverse (assuming that you don't have a dragging clutch or bad pilot bearing.)
If that doesn't work, you may want to the the car roll just enough (only an inch or 2) with the engine off to let reverse engage properly before you put the parking brake on.
