I recently junked my '87 9000T. It was a fun car and was much easier to shift than my current '88 900S will ever be. I think the engines from 900-9000 are mostly identical (up through 1990 they share the 2.0 - 9000 only came w/ 16v head). The big difference between 900 and 9000 that I noticed was that the 9000 felt wider and shorter. 9000's also have dual heated front seats - oh and the doors open MUCH farther on a 9k. I never had any trouble fitting stuff in the back of mine. The seats fold down and it carried 1/2 ton of manure home from Home Depot last spring. The front suspension also seems much easier to work on as well. Only one Ball joint and McPherson strut. Bearings come in one piece and bolt on to the steering member as one unit. They do not need to be pressed in. Replacing the clutch in a 9k is a real b!tch - you have to take the transmission off to do it. That said, the transmission shifts really easily.
I've heard that the 1991 9kt hatch is estimated to be the peak of production up until the 1996 model year or so - 2nd year or 2.3L turbo engine, great gear ratios, and no traction control.
