I have driven 2 Saab 900 S models with automatics for a total of around 100K miles without having to do a rebuild yet. However, I did have to do some maint issues.
I drove a 1984 900S auto 4 door 8 valve from 80 to 130 K miles and it did act up once requiring repairs from my mechanic totaling around $300. After selling car the auto tranny did fail, not sure of mileage but would guess it was failed at around 145 to 150 K miles.
I currently drive a 1990 900 S auto 3 door 16 valve. Have drove it from around 51 K miles to the current 100 K miles and have not had a tranny failure. Have done routine tranny maint, e.g. change of fluid and cleaning of filter screen every other year or 30,000 miles.
These trannys tend to shift at higher RPMs and speeds than many other cars. But my guess is if it is maintained properly, it should last to 150 to 200 K miles before a costly rebuild (expect $2500 for a rebuild installed).
