Step 1: Pull the dipstick. Check the level of the transmission fluid, and the color. If the level is within range, and the fluid is pink or red, should be good. If the fluid is brown, will require a quick change.
If the fluid is really nasty dark and/or smells like burned plastic, beware.
Assuming things are OK, I'd change the fluid. If it looks pretty new, then use synthetic ATF and change the fluid in the pan, drive to mix, and repeat operation 3 or 4 times. (would be a good idea to change the power steering fluid at the same time).
If the fluid looks nasty, get a case of non-synthetic ATF and change fluid about 4 times until it looks good. Then do the same with synthetic ATF.
Check the final drive level. I'd drain and refill with synthetic 75W-90 gear lube.
My 85 900T has just over 190,000 miles. Transmission is still strong (but the o-ring isn't, so I have a leak<g>)
