It sounds likely that it was oil from the clutch or transmission which while not good it sounds less expensive then oil coming from the engine at the same time your clutch gave out. I would be under the assumption that a bearing of some sort gave out on the tranny or the clutch and you either leaked tranny fluid (really black and thick looking, more of it) or hydraulic fluid from the clutch (lighter, thinner and less of it.)
