I was at Scanwest today and spoke with the owner about transmissions. He has rallied Saabs for years. This is not weekend-warrior stuff he's done; we're talking Saab-sponsored cars in SCCA PRO rally (see link). He knows Saabs as well as anyone.
Anyway, he told me that one of the biggest problems with Saab c900 gearboxes isn't necessarily the pinion bearing, it's the heat. With a gearbox temp probe, he found that during hard driving, the needle would *peg* 300 degrees F. What's happening is the gearbox is basically a heatsink for the motor. Dino oil can't handle temps that high, and maybe not even synth can. Not even the biggest radiators helped lower these temps so, for racing, they ended up using tranny coolers. This solution noticeably reduced the motor's temps, too.
I mentioned to him that there's a lot of discussion here about which tranny goop is better. It probably doesn't really matter much (though they have used Redline for years). What does matter is that you *change* it every year, or even more frequently.
