Tucker,

I had a similar problem bleeding my clutch after a major service when I flushed the brake fluid. I searched this bulletin board and found a very good way to resolve the problem. I was able to get the clutch back in about 5 minutes.

It took my old pump Eagle oil can (you can get a new one at a hardware store for less than $10). I drained it and cleaned it out with brake cleaner and filled it with brake fluid. Then I took my siphon (a turkey baster) and removed enough fluid from the resevoir that it was below the level of the clutch portion. Then I siphoned a bit more out of the clutch portion so it was down a good way. Attach a hose to the end of the oil can and run it to the clutch bleeder (my can end looks a lot like a bleeder nipple, so do about half of the ones at True Value Hardware). Now open the bleeder screw and use the oil can to pump brake fluid into the resivoir. Watch the clutch portion of the resevoir and siphon fluid if it gets close to overflowing into the brake portion. When the air stops bubbling out you just need to pump another stoke or two and you are set. You can get in the car and check that the clutch is good. Now fill the resevoir and bleed the way you were originally and you can flush clean fluid through the system.

You have three options to pressure bleed. The best value in my opinion is to get a used resevoir cap and install a tire valve purchased at the hardware store. Then use a bicycle pump or a spare tire with very low pressure (maybe 5 or 6 PSI) to pressurize the cap (not hard to come up with a hose and fittings again from the hardware store). Just watch the fluid level. If it gets too low you have to start over again. The best method is to buy the hand pump pressure bleeder from eEuroparts or IAP (Alfa/Fiat guys, they also sell the universal adapter which will makes the rig more adaptable so you can get you money back eventually). Problem with this system is you have to do a lot of bleeding to pay for it. I am buying one for my Alfa GTV-6 because there are 4 bleeder screws on the inboard rear brakes alone and I like to do track time when possible. This set-up saves a lot of time. The third option and the one I have used the most is the tire tube one. You take the biggest bicycle inner tube you can find at your favorite store and cut it open. Buy a PVC pipe cap that you can stretch the inner tube over and use a hose clamp to secure it. Then use another hose clamp to hold the inner tube on the resevoir (but not too tight, you don't really need this clamp because the innertube can be stretched a long way over the filler neck. A small hand pump like used to inflate basketballs is then all you need to pressurize and bleed. I did all of this for the cost of junk in the garage plus about $0.75 in PVC. It is slow. I also have a vacuum pump but they tend to suck air in and while they work most of the time, I do best with pressure.

Good luck.
