welllllll.......
i'd suggest starting with knowns. i.e it is known that the transmission has to come out. but just in case, you should pull the side covers first and inspect the shift mechanism for clues. start there. that sounds suspiciously like a primary input gear failure. he-men can fix it in the car but sausage venders pull the engine anyway ( obscure??? use saabnet search for sausage) ;). if no clues then pull the unit and tear it down. that has to be done anyway. transmissions are actually pretty easy to rebuild, esp for an S because they don't take the big hp that the turbo modles have. transission rebuilds only LOOK scary. people on this board will be of great help. total cost 3-500. otoh princetons is a pretty well known shop. for a top drawer rebuild consider scanwest. again though, if you have an S then a tear down is order, S transmissions are generally id good internal condition. drain the oil and look for filings.
kind of odd though. S transmissions almost never go bad b4 250kmiles. sounds like lube failure. post next q's to "trans rebuild experts". bunch of us have done a few of them. maybe even jennifer has some answers. :).
