since you have an S i would not obsess about the larger pinion. an 89 box is the box of choice though. large pinion, old style shift forks. you will need to drain it before pulling the cover but pulling the cover will drain half of it for you! :) you cna use any case from 78 4-speed to 88 5-speed. gears have to be from a 5 speed. but...the first step of your thousand mile journey is to pull the engine if you can't see anything worng. if it tries to move in fifth gear only then it has to be the primary gear. pull the front side cover and have a look. no draining necessary. but wait...this just in...there is a coupling between the primary gear and the laygear...if the circlip got dislodged it can decouple. start with the front side cover.
