If you disconnect the plug, the engine will of course die. Try to simulate the vibration that it might get while buzzing down the highway. I have a hunch that you've found at least one of the problems.
Clean the contacts and securely plug it in and support with tape. Then it should not stutter when you gently wiggle the plug/wire. If you still get a miss, then maybe the wire has a break.
