consensus - right or wrong - lies in the following links:

and fwiw:

when i purchased my '89 900t @ ~90k, i swapped the oem oil for redline. it was an improvement over original oil (perhaps only from replacing old for new), but thinned when driving hard - shifting felt like synchros were wearing badly (redline recommended adding another one of their goos, which had a 75w-90 rating). swapped out the redline again, then again but with honda goo: now have smoother shifting and no heat issues.

i contacted redline before swapping in the honda; they replied that there was no need to run a buffer oil between the two (i didn't tell 'em i was swapping *out* their oil :-). presumably, their engineers, chemists, & lawyers would be aware of any ill effects of doing so.

car now has ~140k and gets new gear oil at most every 2 years and, recently, yearly.

as to the saab bulletin @ townsend, curiously, at the end, there is contradictory information about synthetics: it first states that "synthetics have been tested without much success" but then goes on to say that "new Saab gearboxes in the NG900 and 9000 shipped from the factory with a Saab synthetic lubricant PN...."

so, are they speaking specifically to c900 'boxes with synthetic? was their editor on vacation at the time the bulletin was finalized? are they very obliquely implying merely that newer 'boxes have seals made of synthetic-friendly composition? or are they attempting to control what repair shops put in the 'boxes so as to minimize failures due to (perhaps only *some*) synthetics?
