I think it all comes down to, how bad was tranny when Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Seeking advice, 900T tranny lube, Stephen Goldberger, Wed, 21 May 2003 14:03:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the oil was changed to another brand/type.
I don't think it's possible to find statistics to show that more transmissions failed because the oil was swapped from hypoid to motor or synthetic blend.
I have drained many transmission that had hypoid oil from earlier encounters with quick lube places, and used motor oil instead without seeing any trends of early break downs after that.
What might happen though is that the car changes owner, and the new owner drives the car in a different (harder) way than before, and that he brings it to a shop and have the oil replaced with another brand/type. And at the same time, the tranny was nearing it's normal life span anyway.
All these things helps to upset the equilibrium of the transmission, and therefore it breaks down.
It is way more common than most people think, that an old car that change hands breaks down shortly after, even though the former owner hadn't had any problems at all.
