You said... "Direct switch from long time gear oil use to reg motor oil is a no-no, as gear oils have no detergents, and fine metal wear bits settle out and plate the inner case. Motor oil is high detergent, puts particals in suspension, but they ain't removed like in a motor since no fine filter is used. So bearing and gear damage is then likely."
Hmmm, this sits better than the "EP additives etch into the metal" theory, and would account for the wide variation in reported experience (some reporting no problem ... maybe after short time use of gear oil, some reporting immediate death of the bearings, perhaps after long-time use of gear oil.)
Any opinion, then, on whether something like Honda MTL, designed for transverse front drive transaxles and hence probably lacking in EP additives, but also certainly not a high detergent "engine oil" is appropriate, or should I beat the bushes for BG Syncrhoshift II.
This car seems to have had a generally good maintenance history (LOL - how else does it get to 180K and generally run OK), but I'd like to make it shift better b/c it will be my daughter's first experience with a stick.
