Turbo on N/A motor

Hello, my 2.1L 16valve motor was adapted to have a turbo on it before I bought the car. The regular high compression pistons were left in instead of switching to the turbo pistons. I was just wondering why this is so bad. I know that engine knock increases. Is there anything else? I have been using the highest octane gas possible and really haven't had much knock unless I really turn up the boost. I didn't know the engine had high compression pistons in it when I bought it so I wasn't too careful about driving it hard at first. Now I get smoke out the tailpipe once in a while. The turbo is brand new so its not that. I took it to the shop and they predicted that I blew the rings uin one or more pistons and I'm getting blow by which is causing the smoke. I only get smoke when the engine is warmed up and even then it really only smokes when I'm at idle. As soon as I start moving, it goes away. It'l come back later but not right away. Does anyone else think that I have blown rings? Could blown rings cause the engine to stall? The engine runs really smooth and nice but sometimes it will stall.Any other ideas? Thanks for reading this long message!
