There is a good chance that you will need no special tools. First, I would give Jim Moncrief a call at sobstory (a site sponsor) 800-583-0370. He has the right plugs and the right balljoints for much less than the wrong ones from a parts chain. He can coach you on the check engine light, too. While you are waiting a few days for the parts, you can soak the ball joint/control arm bolts with PB Blaster, more on that below.

You can use two old spark plugs for the "special tool" spacers between the upper control arm and where each one rests on the body. Sounds like you will have plenty of these.

To remove the ball joint tapered stud from the steering spindle, loosen the nut on the stud first. Then, whack the side of the "eye" that the stud goes through with a hammer...hard - 5 or 6 times and the stud will pop free. Don't pound on the balljoint stud, just the cast iron spindle. The hammer shock will pop it loose. Don't be afraid to really whack it sharply.

The difficult part of the task can be removing the large bolts that attach the balljoints to the control arms. The bolt can get rusted to the bushing sleeve in the shock. That is what people use an impact hammer to free up or a grinder/dremel to cut the bolt heads off. I have not needed that yet, but I always spray PB Blaster on the joint bolts and where the control arm contacts the balljoint. May take overnight or a few days, respray and whack with a hammer to allow the penetrant to work its way into the parts. If after 3 days or so, the bolts are still frozen, I would cut the bolts with a dremel, angle grinder or saw, and spread the control arms so the ball joints can drop out.
