IIRC the engine is tuned for 185hp with 93 (M+R)/2 octane. If you run it on lower octane gas the APC will limit boost, and the knock sensor will retard timing. The retarded timing will lead to a less efficient engine operation.
As I see it, the knock sensor will be constantly retarding timing and then advancing it to the point it senses knock, i.e., riding on the edge of knock, if you use regular grade gasoline. If the engineers did their thing correctly, this won't harm the engine. If the engineers erred on the side of regular gasoline NOT being a long term operating condition, it won't do the engine any good.
Thrifty and 93 commemorative edition turbo and regular gas are kind of mutually exclusive...feed the puppy what it needs to be happy. Use high octane fuel.
