Sorry Russ, but it's no Urban legend. I had a '78 Buick Regal V6 Turbo that I switched to Amsoil at about 40,000. The turbo was junk by 52,000. The Buick people told me it was oil failure. I have a good friend who used Amsoil 2-cycle oil in his Johnson outboard engines (he was the Amsoil rep by the way) He burned up three powerheads with Amsoil before he switched back to Johnson oil, and ended his problems.
Yes, I am speaking from actual experience, and based on that experience I tell anyone who will listen: I would not use Amsoil in my lawnmower! You can make your own choice, and I will wish you all the luck in the world! Other than my brief and painful experience with Amsoil, I have 35 years of experience using either Valvoline dino or Mobil 1, with NO ENGINE FAILURES. This includes everything from street cars to very expensive racing engines.
