Greg,
I'm always a bit worried of engines in unknown condition. And I know nearly nothing if buying in a scrapyard.
Engine offerd last time was € 2,400.00 and looked very oily. The valve Cover had some scratches/rips and the rest of the engine was dirty with oil and so on.
Wasn't allowed testing the compression or just looking after the spark plugs.
No futher investigation was allowed. That's the policy of that scrapyard.
Saab Parts are in Luxembourg/Germany very expensive so all people dealing with older Saab parts seems to believe that they found a way getting a lot money easily.
And of course Saabs are not common and the rarity of the used parts is increasing the value of each parts.
If buying an used engine with 250,000km on the clock I would do the first thing after collection is a major overhaul of the complete engine.
Can I trust a engine with 250K kms? No major work needed? What's the the gearbox and clutch?
I have only experiences with British cars/engines. The only engine I would trust even with 300,000mls or more on the clock is an engine from Bentley or Rolls Royce. Or Daimler before Jaguar took them over. Maybe a pamperd Rover V8.
I'm so divided about the Saab engines, remembering the troubles with a 82,000km 1982 Saab engine related (poor cold starting, heavy on fuel, leaking oil, overheating, head gasket 3-times before solved etc.)
I don't want to renew every part if the engine is in the Conv.. Overhauling a Saab engine is very costly ...
How much are engines with not more than 75,000mls on the clock in the
States? (Of course with gearbox/clutch/all other needed parts (starter, alternator etc).
Shipping costs are near US$ 700.00 and I have to pay duty (32% of all costs! Thankx to the trade war between Europe and the States...)
