I believe that the c900 manual transmission was originally designed in the late 70's when a europeasn sedan with 100 hp was considered average (note that the original 8v turbo has a whopping 135hp) As turbo engineering progressed the cars were made more and more powerful. The downside to this is that the transmissions remained (more or less) the same unit. One reason why you hear so much about failing transmissions is that many owners raise the power of the engine and reap the benefits in the form of a rebuilt transmission.
It would be interesting to see if transmission problems correlate with production year. ie "Are pinion bearing failures common on the early (80-84) c900 8v turbos"
