First SAAB was a '72 99e in 1988 with the old Triumph engine and D-Jetronic open loop electronic fuel injection. Owner was a woman who got tired of the repairs and gave it to me. Rebuilt every mechanical assembly on the car (read my old post about the horrors of the Triumph engine), loaded my stuff into it and drove it to CA from CT. Car was totalled when I was hit from behind while sitting at a light. The other guy was doing 40mph at impact.

Bought an absolutely perfect '72 99e here in CA back in 1990 to replace totalled car. No rust and 34,000 original miles. Car was owned by a Yugoslavian guy who stored it for eight years, then bought by surfer dude who thought the engine would go 60 miles with no coolant. Engine was totally seized. Towed it back to my place, then stripped every mechanical component off my totalled car including the engine in one night. Drove the resulting blended car til 1995.

Two years ago, I get an early morning call from a woman friend of mine asking me if I wanted her '83 900T with 86,000 original miles for free. I said, "Sure."

She said, "Good, because it's being towed to your house as we speak." Once again, she was tired of the repairs. This car has silver metallic paint, a perfect body, and NO RUST.

Six months earlier, I had replaced the clutch and gone through the brakes including two rebuilt front calipers, all of which she paid for. The car didn't run, but I found a bad rubber turbo pipe connector ($35.00) and a fried distributor rotor (the contact was totally burned through). So it cost me about 50 bucks to get it running.

Two years and some TLC later, the 900T is running strong. Yesterday, my girlfriend and I spent the day hiking at 8,000 feet. The turbo gives full power at even higher altitudes with just a little extra lag. Still one of the best bad weather cars ever made.
