This year I decided to take a course and get certified to charge up my r-12 system rather than convert, seeing cans of R-12 still relatively cheap on E-bay. Online test answer 22/25 correct and your certified. Bought 3 cans of R-12 on E-bay. Last month I deposited 2 cans into system which brough pressure up to 250, which is about right. AHHH, nice cold air flow. A few days later the car, with or without A/C running, shut down at 45mph. Would not immediately start up, until 30 minutes later. Drove a few more miles and car shut down again. Had car towed to mechanics, $150 and 2 hours of diagnostics, and the mechanic "couldn't find anything wrong". car ran and idled perfect for him. I told him to put in a fuel pump, $160 later and was on my way. Car did run better, with new fuel pump. Naturally, I was expecting car to shut down...it did not. I turned on the A/C and it blew warm air! The freon was gone! Theory: The freon had leaked out somewhere, possibly as liquid, and shorted out something to cause the car to shut down. I took the car to an A/C specialist. He juiced up a pound of freon with dye, to check for leaks. $150. drove for a couple of days to circulate. Returning to A/C shop, he indeed found a leak: the O rings. Lost 50% of a pound. The O rings are located near the fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors, to name a few things, which could have been contaminated with freon, which caused the car to shut down. Repaired a F#4%in 78 cent O-ring, and filled the remaining 1.5 lbs of freon to make it 2.2lbs, the A/C is now leak free. This time the cost was $171. Total cost: Tow $50, $150 diagnosis, $160 fuel pump, $321 A/C shop. Almost $700! Cost to convert A/C to 134A: $500. Moral of this post: BE SURE TO EVACUATE YOUR A/C SYSTEM BEFORE RECHARGING. Bentley's service manual tells you this over & over again, to evacuate. R-12 systems will stay charged for many years, if you need to top off, you have a leak; unlike 134A systems which need it every 2 years. Anyway, enough rambling.....
