Dave R. I was told at the A/C shop, that R-12 does not need topping off, it will remain in your A/C system for several years, at full capacity. 134A on the other hand, needs to be topped off or serviced every 2 to 3 years. This was told to me by a shop that does ONLY A/C repairs. Another fact I asked about that is often bandied about is; is it a good idea to run your A/C once a week during winter to keep the seals and gaskets lubricated in the compressor. I was told it wasn't neccesary, since the clutch is working when the defroster is on. So if you have an R-12 system, and you are getting NO COLD AIR, the minimum work needed will be discharge&evacuate, a pound of freon, and dye. This is $150 just to find out WHERE your leak is. It would be better to convert to 134A BEFORE testing for the leak. This $150 could be used for conversion to 134A, which needs a system flush with mineral spirits, new receiver dryer, expansion valve, and correct compressor fluid. However, you will still of course need to find your leak. This is where you save some bucks by the cost of 134A over R-12 per pound. $70 vs. $18, not to mention it is enviormentally friendly.
