R134 retrofits main problem

If the car came with R134 from the factory, it had barrier-type hoses, or hoses that don't leak R134A. Retrofits generally don't call for replacement of hoses since the R12-compatible mineral oil has saturated the hoses and provides somewhat of a barrier to the smaller molecules of R134A (there's the technical bit).
FWIW, the EPA once tried to get mandatory replacement of AC hoses every four years on the grounds that the hoses deteriorate...you can guess how far that went. Still, it makes the point that ALL hoses leak somewhat...it's just that R134A, even on OEM installations, leaks faster, and what's worse, there is about 1/2 as much R134A in a modern system as there used to be R12, so you notice a leaked system faster.
Still, I've had at least one car with an R134A retrofit that has gone five years without "topping up"...87 volvo 760T.
