This is an alarming story Ken. Now, I sort of expect this kind of event for those rust belt cars, chuckholed roads, etc. BUT, your '88 is not that kind of car, neither is mine, a 2-owner '89 SPG with barely over 100k miles. I also emphatically concur that this is NOT consistent with what we know about Saab, about Swedish cars. I am planning trucking all over USA with mine, without worries.
I have not done an archive search for this gremlin, but I'm sure many will be very eager to learn what your research uncovers. In the meantime, those that have good data on control arm failures, please offer your input. I would like to know:
1) Is the crack portrayed in the pic typical? How many ways does this arm fail? What else to inspect for?
2) What's the poop on the new p/n? Anybody know if this is an improved part in 1990? Why buy used arms, also fragile? Who's a good source for new part?
3) Is there enough frequency of lower arm failure to justify everyone replacing there's asap?
Thanx for yer input. LIVES COULD BE SAVED!!
Grateful Dave
