Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The ECU is the electronic unit that's behind the carpeting on the right side kicpanel. They can be anywhere from $40 or so for a junkyard pull on up. You can use an ECU from an '88 through '91 900S or an '89 through 93 (or 94CV) turbo. I ran an ECU from a '90 900S for quite a while. If you're electronically adventurous and not prone to static discharge, you can swap the EPROM chip from your turbo ECU into a non-turbo ECU of the same type (LH 2.4).
But first, like Rob suggested, check the connector to the AMM - having that drop off will give you that symptom for sure. If you have any tuner cleaner, try cleaning up the contacts on the connector. And, if you have a spare AMM (ends in 013) try that. Limp home mode is usually AMM-related.
The symptom you describe probably doesn't have anything to do with the APC
