Although I can't back this up with quotes and statistics, but I think part of the reason why SAAB wasn't as embraced as it's equally foreign competitors such as Mercedes and BMW is because of the politics of the countries from which those cars originated. The 80's were the peak of the cold war, yes? So naturally, anything remotely associated with the hated socialist or communist governments of the world at that time would have gotten the cold shoulder whereas our allied friends got the nod. Sweden did the right thing by embracing a market driven economy and competing honestly with the world's best by building a damn fine car, and for that was embraced and recognized by enough folks outside of northern Europe regardless of politics.
