the timing chain, sprockets and camshafts are 'broken in nicely'. As this will most likely be my mom's car, and top performance is not as much of an issue, I'm willing to let the chain and such go until the next water pump.
The real problem, however, is the camshaft 'bearing' itself. The source of the cam follower noise is that the camshaft has almost 1 mm of play over no.1 cylinder, intake side. My dad, on instinct, said the bearings need to be replaced, not thinking that the car is 25 years younger than the last car he saw which uses bearings on the camshaft.
Judging by how the chain acts on the 'bearing', it's unfortunately not the easy-to-replace bearing cap, but the head itself which has been worn. [I'm guessing the same mechanic who charged the prev. owner for a muffler mount and replaced it with a zip-tie is the one who didn't change the plastic oil feed lines which caused this problem.]
Do you know if there is a solution for this particular 'issue'? (New head notwithstanding.) I will check with my local Saab guy today, for his opinion as well. Thanks again for the correspondence.
