Compressing clutch pressure plate manually....

Would this work.... Pushing in each finger of the pressure plate with a screw driver and using my bodyweight, while a helper wedges a small nut in place with pliers. I can get a bag of nuts at the hardware store for not much $$ obvisouly, and in theory it seem slike it should work. Can those with experience here give me their opinion on that, or a better idea? The slave is shot and won't compress the plate.
