I'll agree wholeheartedly on the Sawzall. When I couldn't get the slave to compress the pressure plate enough to put the tool in, I started to hacksaw the slave. With a new blade (for soft metals) it took me about 35 minutes. Just when I got all the way through, my neighbor who owns a Sawzall pulled into his driveway. With an abrasive sawzall blade for cast iron, it would take about 2 minutes.
My experience with bare copper ground wire was that, after I pounded it in, it developed all sorts of short, sharp copper slivers and wasn't quite thick enough to compress the fingers enough to get the plate and slave out. I was picking those slivers out of my fingers for a couple of days. (If you do go the copper wire route, keep your tetanus shots up-to-date :-)
