1988 900 Turbo Conv
hey guys....
our little convertible is sick... might be an easy fix according to a saab guy i spoke with today... wanted to get your opinions.
(see pic below) I was driving down the highway and went to overtake a car, was in the process of accellerating but nothing violent by any means. The car started to go then quickly lost power and hesitated to regain speed. I was losing speed and had to press the accelerator a good bit before it would pick back up and when it did pick back up it didn't sound quite right (almost like a weird exhaust blow out sound or something) I was less than a mile from home and being on the hwy decided to drive it home. When I came to the traffic light near my place the car died. I had to hold down the accelerator to get it to run and rev it up to keep it running (all the time not running so nice)... at that point I smelled what I thought was burning oil (now I think it might be unspent fuel according to the saab guy). Got it home and had loss of power brakes/steering and coasted into her parking spot. Popped the hood and found the intake cap/valve had popped off (ORANGE ARROW IN PIC). The rubber seal at the bottom of this piece is pretty worn, lots of cracks. I'm affraid to just pop it back in there to try it because the rubber may break off in the intake (that can't be a good thing). Also, since we've owed the car there is a vacum line thats broken right about in the middle (YELLOW ARROW IN PIC) - Does anyone know where this vacum line leads to/from. So here's where I'm at:
1. Is this somewhat normal or did something catastrophic happen to cause this to occur
2. do you think replacing the cap with a new one might solve the trick (the saab guy said he thought that that was all there was to it) What is the proper name for this piece? Cost? Where to purchase?
3. Could the broken vacum line have had anything to do with this?
4. if simply replacing the cap/valve piece doesn't work, is it ok to drive it in it's current condition to the Saab repair shop (about 2-3 miles away)
Many many thanks!
Chris
