Gee, Nathan, you got a good brain teaser here.
And this problem started when you put the vacuum advance unit in?
Time to dig down to the bottom of the bag of tricks. These are scattershot thoughts, but one of them may help.
What else did you change the day you originally changed the vacuum advance can?
What's your timing set at?
Are the bushings for the vacuum nipples tight?
Is the ground point at the front lifting eye clean and tight?
Are the AMM connector contact points clean?
Have you tried cleaning the contact points in the ECU connector with something like tuner cleaner?
What's the battery voltage at idle?
I'm still leaning towards something to do with the boots and clamps between the turbo and the throttle manifold.
One thought came to mind - check the hose running to the AIC valve from upstream of the throttle plate. Sometimes they deteriorate from oil exposure. There was a posting about that a year or so ago.
talk about your infuriating problem.
